How Norn Works

Import or Compose
Import existing contracts (PDF, DOCX, ODT, TXT, MD) with image preservation, or compose from scratch with a rich text editor. Multiple documents open in tabs. Automatic section and field detection on import.
Document Packages
Every document carries structural metadata: template lineage, field declarations, provenance chain, and SHA-256 integrity hashes. Deterministic validation distinguishes Norn-native from imported documents.
Signature Capture & Sending
Draw, type, or upload signatures. Send documents for signing via managed mailbox. Each signatory gets a secure link to fill only their assigned fields. Parallel or sequential signing order.
Conditional Sections
Wrap content in conditional sections with inclusion rules. Browse the clause library and insert pre-built sections inline. Condition tree model supports AND/OR nesting with variable references.
Footer Provenance
Exported documents carry governance metadata: form number, version, timestamp, integrity hash. Optional branding line (removable on execution copies for paid tiers). Draft and execution copy controls are separate.
Template Versioning
Every save snapshots the previous version with auto-incrementing version numbers. Form-number-based save dialog produces both .norn template and master PDF. Full history with revert.
Smart Field Detection
Heuristic detection with four replacement modes: replace entire region, replace input only (preserving labels), preserve label and replace control (checkboxes), or insert adjacent (signatures). Formatting artifacts automatically filtered.
Governed Archive
Signed contracts are immutable. Access is logged. Integrity verified via SHA-256 provenance chains. Retention periods enforced. Seven-year default for commercial agreements.
Formula Engine
Currency fields with configurable symbols. Formula fields compute from other fields: line totals, subtotals, tax, grand totals. Recursive descent parser with SUM, MIN, MAX, ROUND.
Template Exchange
Share templates within your organization. Private and org-shared visibility levels. Publisher attribution, document type and jurisdiction metadata. Fork tracking for template lineage.
Platform Integration
Contacts auto-populate from filled fields. Contract lifecycle tracking (Draft → Signed → Archived). Ratatosk manifest export for ERP ingestion. Enterprise direct API integration.
